What is Assisted Living? How Is It Different From a Nursing Home?

Assisted living provides help with daily activities — bathing, dressing, meals, medication — in a home-style setting where residents maintain independence. Nursing homes provide higher-level medical and skilled nursing care. Most seniors do not need nursing home care and thrive in assisted living instead.

What Is Memory Care and Who Needs It?

Memory care is specialized assisted living designed for people with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or other forms of memory loss. It includes structured routines, secured environments, and caregivers trained specifically in dementia care. Signs your loved one may need memory care: repeated disorientation, wandering, inability to manage daily tasks safely, or behavioral changes.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost? Does Insurance Cover It?

Assisted living costs vary by location, level of care, and facility type. Most assisted living costs are paid privately (out of pocket). Long-term care insurance, veterans benefits (Aid & Attendance), and Medicaid waiver programs may provide partial coverage depending on eligibility. We recommend speaking with a senior care financial advisor if cost is a concern.

What Levels of Care Does Affectionate Care Offer?

We offer three levels of care — from our most independent Level 1 plan for residents who need minimal assistance, through Level 2 intermediate support, to Level 3 Full Memory Care for residents with Alzheimer's or advanced dementia requiring the highest level of supervision and specialized cognitive support. Level of care is assessed individually and can change over time.

How Does the Move-In Process Work?

Our joining process has 7 steps: pre-assessment, level of care determination, reserving a space, reviewing community details, completing medical and legal forms, finalizing financial arrangements, and finally — Move-In Day, where we welcome your loved one to their new home. The entire process typically takes 2–4 weeks from initial inquiry to move-in, though we can accommodate urgent timelines.

Families may visit anytime during regular hours, join residents for meals, participate in special events, and stay in regular contact with our team. What Questions Should I Ask When Touring Assisted Living Facilities?

Key questions: What is the staff-to-resident ratio? What happens if my loved one's care needs increase? How are medications managed? What does the monthly fee include — and what costs extra? How are emergencies handled? Can I visit anytime? What is staff turnover like? Ask all of these when you tour Affectionate Care — we're proud to answer every one of them.

How Do I Help a Parent Who Refuses to Consider Assisted Living?

Resistance to assisted living is common and understandable — it can feel like a loss of independence. Effective approaches include: focusing on safety and social connection rather than "needing care," involving them in the decision process, arranging a casual tour visit, speaking with their doctor, and addressing specific fears directly. Our team has experience helping families navigate this sensitive conversation.

What Makes Affectionate Care Different From Other Assisted Living Facilities?

Several things set us apart: our dedicated pharmacist (the only one in Richmond exclusively serving assisted living), our industry-low staff-to-resident ratio, our purpose-built 2020 facility, our Certified Memory Care program, our certified dementia practitioners, our comprehensive wellness and activities programming, and most importantly — a culture of genuine warmth where residents are truly known and celebrated as individuals, not just cared for.

What Happens if There's a Medical Emergency With My Loved One?

Our multi-layer emergency response activates immediately: on-site caregivers respond within seconds, escalating to our on-call Nurse Practitioner or physician as needed. For serious emergencies, 911 is called. Families are notified promptly. Every resident also has a personal emergency response device they can use at any time.
